Admirable friendship, admirable companionship, admirable camraderie is actually the whole of the holy life. When a monk has admirable people as friends, companions and comrades, he can be expected to develop and persue the Noble Eightfold Path.

While this sutta verse was addressed to the monks, the same holds true to lay people. In Buddhism, a spiritual friend is known as Kalyanamitta and when translated, means ‘Friendship with the Lovely’. It is not just having spiritual friends that is the whole of the Holy Life but our affiliation, our intimacy with those who practise to realise the Ultimate Truth.
